The Basic Hiking Skills training is a great opportunity for both girls and adult volunteers who love getting outdoors to begin exploring the endless opportunities it has to offer!
Basic Hiking Skills is our council’s one-day foundation course that can be applied to any level
hiking and/or backpacking adventure. It provides outdoor enthusiasts (Junior level and above) with the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and execute a safe, fun-filled day hike, whether it be an afternoon jaunt or a full day of exploration. As a foundation for outdoor exploration, we’ll take you through the whole process from start to finish! You will learn the basics of simply where to begin once you’ve made the decision to plan your first hike, how to pick the right trail and how to navigate it, gear essentials, packing appropriately, the 10 Essentials, and tons more.
By the end of the training, you should be confident in your skills and knowledge to safely lead your girls on an exciting day hike, while adhering to Girl Scout hiking protocol/ideals of encouraging them to lead, take charge, exercise good judgement and being self-sufficient.
By creating the ultimate outdoor leadership experience for our girls, we are also both creating and stacking the building blocks (opportunities, memories, knowledge, etc.) that will develop the courage, confidence and character within each one of them to ultimately make the world a better place.
